We hope you’re enjoying the winter weather here in Northern Michigan. With the changing seasons in November, we welcomed some new faces and team members to our Chemical Bank team through our partnership with The Bank of Northern Michigan. We aligned two institutions with similar core philosophies, which allowed us to expand our community banking efforts in Michigan’s fastest growing markets. We look forward to continuing to serve you in a greater capacity, especially with our new teammates in the Traverse City and Petoskey markets.

Through this partnership, we were able to host an event called the Leadership Exchange. This dynamic discussion, led by our Chairman, CEO and President, David Ramaker, brought together 10 community leaders who shared their insights on what it takes to master workforce development across multiple industries and in an ever-changing market. After the discussion, community members were invited to network and continue the discussion.

Common issues that were identified during the panel discussion included a lack of affordable or appropriate housing in the area, the struggle to find good workers with a solid work ethic, and how to retain the current talent in your company. One of the strong solutions to begin solving these issues was to collaborate with local businesses and resources.

This is one of the things I love about the communities Chemical Bank resides in across the state. We all admit to having struggles and weaknesses, and we reach out to the companies and organizations around us to make positive changes and improvements in the communities we live. I believe that this Leadership Exchange event was only the beginning of this collaboration and idea sharing between leaders in our community. We look forward to hosting more of them in the future!

Chemical Bank’s mission is to provide enjoyable, valuable and memorable service to you. If you feel we have done so, please tell a friend, family member or business associate. If you would like to share an exceptional experience, or do not feel we have met your expectations for any reason, please feel free to contact me directly at Donna.McAvoy@ChemicalBankMI.com or (231) 932-6698.

Sincerely,

Donna McAvoy

photo-Joel-RahnHappy New Year! I hope you had a safe and happy holiday season. This is my favorite time of year, besides the unpredictable Michigan winter weather. It’s a time for new beginnings and goal setting, but also the perfect time to look back on the great memories and accomplishments of the previous year.

2015 was another eventful year for Chemical Bank. Arguably, the biggest event of the year was our partnership with The Bank of Holland in November. We welcomed some new faces to the Chemical family and expanded our locations and available services in the Holland area.

Looking forward to 2016 and beyond, what better time to start planning for the future? Perhaps your family is growing and you could use a little more space. Be it remodeling, adding on to your current home or purchasing an entirely new house, Chemical Bank Mortgage Loan Officers are here to help find the lending options that works best for you. Or maybe your family is growing up and it’s time to start putting away for college. Chemical Bank offers a variety of savings accounts that make saving simple.

If one of your goals this New Year is to get away from the Michigan winter weather, we can help you find the right personal loan option to get you off on that dream vacation! Maybe you’re planning more of a “long-term break” from the daily grind. Chemical Bank’s Wealth Management can help you manage your portfolio and get you on the path to achieving your retirement goals.

Our goal is to help you reach your financial goals and achieve your dreams. I invite you to share your aspirations with a Chemical Banker, and let us help you create a plan to make those dreams a reality in 2016. I always welcome our customer’s thought and opinions; if you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact me at (616) 588-7425 or Joel.Rahn@ChemicalBankMI.com.

Sincerely,

Joel F. Rahn

photo-Donna-McAvoyWe enjoyed a vibrant fall, and as the winter season continues, we look for the spring thaw to arrive soon. That’s the great thing about Michigan–seasons change from one to the next. As soon as you become comfortable with one particular time of year, exciting changes take place!

Chemical Bank has experienced exciting changes as well, offering exciting opportunities as we continue to grow as the second largest banking company in Michigan. This spring we welcomed the Monarch Bank team to the Chemical Bank family as we completed our merger with Monarch Community Bancorp, Inc. This partnership gave us a significant presence along the Michigan-Indiana border and in Lansing, with a bank whose values, culture and dedication to service mirror our own. We are pleased to have opened Chemical Bank’s newest loan production office in the Lansing Community! Check out this edition’s East Region Community Spotlight to learn more about our loan production office in Lansing.

Another change: This fall, I accepted the opportunity to step in as the Interim East Region President. I’m very excited to support and work with my fellow East Region customers and team members! With that, I would like to briefly introduce myself (if we haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet):

My Chemical Bank career began at 18 as a Teller working at the Owosso Community Bank office. With a true passion for serving customers, I was excited to learn more while growing with Chemical Bank. I went on to assume various leadership roles within the bank such as Branch Manager, Controller, and Assistant Vice President of Operations. I have also served as Owosso Branch Administrator, Owosso Community President and Corporate Branch Sales Manager. In 2014, I accepted the opportunity to relocate from Owosso to Traverse City and serve as the North Region Bank President and Director of Retail Banking. This new role also offered the opportunity to serve as a member of Chemical Bank’s Senior Leadership Team as well as Trustee of the Chemical Bank Foundation.

I will retain my existing responsibilities as North Region President and Director of Retail Banking in addition to assuming leadership and oversight as the East Region President until this role is filled in a permanent capacity.

Sincerely,

photo-Rick-DeVriesHappy New Year to each of you! This time of year is a time of reflection, gratitude, and enjoyment of friends, family and things that matter most. In that spirit, I express to you our gratitude for the privilege of serving you.

“Caring” was at the heart of the recent holiday celebrations. It is also the foundation for the work we do all year long. In that regard, let me share a heartwarming story about one of our tellers and the difference she made in the life of a customer.

The customer is a disabled veteran who comes into our branch a few times each month. Some time ago, our teller noticed that the customer’s automatic wheelchair was broken. Seeing his struggles, she wheeled him down the street to his next destination. While in route, she learned that his wheelchair would not soon be repaired. This concerned her, so she went into action.

She began calling local organizations on her lunch hour, attempting to find him a temporary wheelchair at no cost. She finally succeeded and – on her own time – drove to the agency that volunteered to help. However, upon her arrival, she discovered that the large wheelchair did not fit in her vehicle. So, she drove many miles back to her residence, where she picked up a larger car. By the end of the day, the wheelchair was in the home of our customer, who was surprised, delighted and very grateful.

I was touched by the capacity of this teller to respond to our customer’s challenging situation. This goes far beyond banking and business, and is symbolic of our “why” statement here at Chemical – “We are inspired by the dreams of our customers and communities and are committed to making those dreams a reality.”

Each of us has the capacity to provide a helping hand, a kind word, or a caring moment to someone during the course of our busy lives. My hope is that you and I will act – like our teller did – on those opportunities we discover, and that you will enjoy a happy, healthy and prosperous 2016.

With much gratitude,

Rick DeVries
Regional President
