With Michigan experiencing a record breaking cold winter, many Northern Michigan communities held some of their best winter festivals in years thanks to cold temperatures and falling snow.
HALE YES WINTERFEST
This annual festival was held during the weekend of January 17th, and is located in Northeast Michigan. The Hale Yes Winterfest included a women’s expo on Sunday, outhouse races, Bump & Run and demo derby, ATV and snowmobile drags, chili cook off and much more. Thank you to the Hale Area Association and all of the volunteers and sponsors that help put this great event on! For more information, please visit haleyes.org/winterfest.shtml.
LAKE CITY POLAR PLUNGE FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS
On Saturday, January 18th, two employees from our Lake City branch participated in the Special Olympics Polar Plunge held at the Town Pump Saloon on Lake Missaukee. Caitlyn Shead and Danielle Hoblet wore Lake City High School jerseys in support of their hometown school while making the plunge. This is Danielle’s third year participating in the event and Caitlyn’s first. They hope to continue to recruit more Chemical Bank employees in support of Special Olympics. Thank you to Danielle and Caitlyn for showing your support!

Saturday started off with a great pancake breakfast, and from there you could head to Pioneer Hill for the Crazy Cardboard Classic Downhill Run. The Chemical Bank Roscommon branch entered their cardboard sled into the event and won the award for Originality. Join the fun next year and bring your own sled made from cardboard, tape and glue (no wood, metal or staples) or just come to watch the fun! hlrcc.com

WINTERFEST IN GUN LAKE
2014 warranted to be the perfect year for Gun Lake’s Winterfest. There was definitely no shortage of snow or cold temperatures. Our Gun Lake staff braved the cold weather on a chilly Saturday in February to greet festival attendees with warm smiles and ice scrapers for their frozen cars. Thank you to all of our employees and customers that came out on that cold day to support the festival.
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION’S WEAR RED DAY
On February 7th, Chemical Bank employees across the state participated in the American Heart Association’s Wear Red for Women day. Many of our employees wore red on that Friday to raise awareness in the fight against heart disease, the leading cause of death for women.
CHEMICAL BANK’S CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAYS
Beginning this May we kicked off our summer Customer Appreciation Days. Every year we look forward to setting aside a special day and saying “Thank You” to all of our customers. Many of our Customer Appreciation Days are held in conjunction with other community happenings. Watch for notices at your local office for their upcoming Customer Appreciation Day event.

Mark your calendar for the 10th Annual 5K Walk/Run and Kids Fun Run, presented by Chemical Bank in Byron Center, which will be held on Saturday, July 26th, 2014. To celebrate the 10-year anniversary, we will be donating over $10,000 to charitable organizations in our community. You can visit ChemicalBankMI.com/Race for more details, including a training guide and online registration as the event nears.
What a winter! East Region Chemical Bankers tied up their snow boots and clambered out into the cold to participate in many wonderful community activities. If you decided to “hibernate” this winter, make sure you get some fresh air this spring and summer by joining Chemical Bank at local events in your community. Keep a look out for upcoming event notices at your local office or on our website at ChemicalBankMI.com. As we set our minds, bodies and wardrobes toward the warmer months ahead, please join us in looking back at a couple of past winter events that brought about great times and community spirit.

WALK FOR WARMTH
This year several Walk for Warmth events were sponsored by Chemical Bank and coordinated through the following agencies: Mid-Michigan Community Action Agency, Capital Area Community Services and the Human Development Commission throughout several counties in the East Region. Walk for Warmth raises community awareness about the many people that go through the winter with little or no heat; funds are raised during the event to help these individuals and families stay warm. We would like to thank all of our Chemical Bank volunteers who braved the cold and stepped out on February 22nd to participate in the annual Walk for Warmth events that took place in their communities.
TEACH CHILDREN TO SAVE
For the past several years, Chemical Bank has participated in the American Bankers Association’s Teach Children to Save Week. We visit second grade classrooms all across the lower peninsula and read our story book entitled Dollar the Silver Squirrel, which teaches children about the importance of saving. In 2014, Chemical Bank’s East Region team visited over 30 elementary schools, totaling more than 3,500 students; the students at Marlette Elementary School in Marlette were even fortunate enough to meet Dollar the Silver Squirrel in person! Thank you to all of our employees who volunteered for the event and for all of the schools that participated in our savings program!
Though this winter has proved to be a blustery, bitter cold experience for everyone throughout the great state of Michigan, Chemical Bank employees still went out into their communities and participated in ice festivals, parades, home shows and many other events. In case you missed us, we recently attended the Southwest Michigan Horticulture Show, Branch County Farmer’s Day, Kalamazoo Home Expo and Garden Show, as well as the Farm Women’s Symposium. To help our neighbors raise funds, our employees took part in fundraisers such as Junior Achievement of Michiana’s Bowl-A-Thon, Marshall Exchange Club’s Bowling Bash and Niles Four Flags USBC’s Bowl for a Cure.
HUNTER ICE FESTIVAL
Our Niles Main Branch opened up their office as a warming station during the Hunter Ice Festival in January. Serving over 350 cups of hot chocolate and coffee, and 32 dozen cookies, Chemical Bank was deemed as the best warming station in town by several festival goers. We also offered free sleigh rides that took couples and families through the city of Niles to check out the ice sculptures. We would like to thank all of the employees who took time out of their weekend to offer wonderful hospitality to the attendees.
