Community Spotlight

This summer, the North Region enjoyed helping out in communities and participating in many events. We would like to thank our customers, team members and communities for helping us make this summer enjoyable, valuable and memorable. As we transition into fall, we look back on some of the highlights from the past few months.

GAYLORD ALPENFEST

The Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce hosted their 50th Annual Alpenfest from July 15th – 19th. The event included five days of festivities including a parade, carnival, kid’s games and contests, pancake breakfast, ethnic food, live entertainment and the World’s Largest Coffee Break! Alpenfest is also Gaylord’s unofficial annual homecoming weekend, with former residents returning to enjoy the festivities. This year, Dollar the Silver Squirrel joined in the fun and walked in the parade with the Chemical Bank team, sporting his pair of specially crafted lederhosen! Make sure to join the Gaylord community and Chemical Bank team at next year’s Alpenfest!

RELAY FOR LIFE

Thank you to our employees and community partners for participating in the Relay for Life programs each year! Our North Region employees enjoy participating both individually and as a team by donating, fundraising or helping plan Relay events for the following counties: Arenac, Crawford, Iosco, Mecosta, Missaukee, Montcalm, Ogemaw, Osceola, Roscommon and Wexford. We appreciate the dedication and support our community members and Chemical Bankers provide to reach the lives of those in need.

What a great summer for the West Region! We hope you had the chance to come out and enjoy some “fun in the sun” with Chemical Bank as we participated in many community activities. Don’t worry if you missed us this summer, we have plenty of great events in store; however, before we transition into a new time of year, please join us in looking back at a couple of past summer events that brought about great times and community spirit.

10TH ANNUAL BYRON CENTER 5K WALK/RUN AND KIDS FUN RUN

This year we celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Chemical Bank 5K Run/Walk. Chemical Bank’s 5K took place on July 26th in Byron Center with more than 800 runners and walkers participating. In honor of our 10-year anniversary, we were able to make two special donations. Before the start of the race Joel Rahn, Regional Bank President, presented $5,000 checks to Byron Community Ministries and Buist Community Assistance Center. The Chemical Bank 5K also benefits other local organizations, such as Byron Center High School, South Christian High School, Kent County CERT, A-T Children’s Project and Families of SMA. We want to thank everyone who made this race possible from our sponsors, participants and volunteers … without you we wouldn’t be able to give back to our community!

29TH ANNUAL WEDGWOOD CHRISTIAN SERVICES CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC

On June 2nd, Chemical Bank was the proud title sponsor of the 29th Annual Wedgwood Christian Services Charity Golf Classic. More than 425 golfers took to the course at the beautiful Egypt Valley Country Club. This year’s event was one of the largest charity golf events in West Michigan, raising more than $218,000 to support at-risk youth and families!

OUT AND ABOUT

One of the many benefits of being a Community Bank is participating in all of the county fairs, which provide a great way to support local communities. Over the summer, Chemical Bankers volunteered at many fairs throughout the West Region to offer a helping hand with the events while enjoying the entertainment and festivities. Chemical Bank knows that county fairs are an important facet of the community, which is why we purchase animals and clerk livestock auctions in support of Michigan 4-H clubs and members. Please do not hesitate to stop and say hello to a Chemical Bank representative the next time you see them at your local county fair!

The Chemical Bank team believes it’s important to be active participants in helping the communities we serve. Our West Region employees recently hosted a friendly competition where employees were asked to contribute small plastic bags and peanut butter. More than 500 jars of peanut butter and 500 boxes of bags were collected and donated to Kids’ Food Basket in Grand Rapids.

The East Region enjoyed a busy summer while participating in plenty of festivals and activities throughout the communities we serve. We would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make these events possible! Now that we’re in the fall season, let’s take a look back on a summer that made for a truly enjoyable, valuable and memorable experience for Chemical Bankers and East Region communities alike.

WE HEATED UP THE SUMMER

At home and on the street – as summer began, Chemical Bank employees measured, pounded nails and painted houses as part of the Saginaw, Midland and Freeland Habitat for Humanity projects. In the Mt. Pleasant community, everyone welcomed in the summer with their annual Tour de Mt. Pleasant, and Chemical Bankers helped out registering bikers prior to the race.

A blast from the past – Chemical Bank was excited to be the presenting sponsor of The Steam Railroading Institutes 2014 Train Festival, held June 20th – 22nd in Owosso. The festival brought people from all over the country to see several historic steam and diesel trains on display, including the 1225 Polar Express, Little River and Leviathan, just to name a few. Visitors had the opportunity to climb aboard and tour the cabs, take pictures, view demonstrations and blow the whistle of these magnificent trains. A giant model Lego train was on exhibit and awed visitors of all ages. Chemical Bank employees helped as volunteers counting money and manning the admission table for the festival. The festival also included a “wings” section which offered rides on a B-17 plane, and vintage cars were on display.

Celebrating good times – July marked the beginning of summer with parades and festivals. Chemical Bank sponsored the Auburn Cornfest, Bay City Ballads and Brews, Midland River Days and the Farwell Lumberjack Festivals.

Summer may be gone, but Chemical Bank’s community spirit remains warm and bright all year long! As the South Region looks forward to many of the upcoming community events this fall, we give summer a kind farewell by looking back on the activities that Chemical Bank participated in.

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT AT COBURN ELEMENTARY

Chemical Bank takes every opportunity it gets to give back to the communities we serve. Our Battle Creek and Marshall teams partnered with Junior Achievement of Southwest Michigan and taught a five week, activity-based economic program in every class at the Coburn Elementary K-5th grade school in Battle Creek, reaching a total of 265 students!

Following the completion of the course, Coburn Elementary held a celebration assembly where each student received an achievement certificate. Dollar the Silver Squirrel was on hand to celebrate with the children and to help our bankers hand out backpacks filled with goodies and school supplies to every student. We are grateful for partnerships such as these because not only do we have the opportunity to impact the lives of many students, but the students impact our lives as well.

3RD ANNUAL RACE FOR YMCA

The 3rd Annual Race for YMCA presented by Chemical Bank took place on July 19th in St. Joseph, where over 450 runners and walkers enjoyed the 5K and 10K course along beautiful Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River. Over 45 Chemical Bank volunteers assisted with registration, hospitality, aid stations, as well as course set-up and directions. All proceeds benefited the Benton Harbor – St. Joseph YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASH!

Chemical Bank’s Kalamazoo Community Bank was proud to partner with the Family Health Center and the Kalamazoo Promise to make their Back-to-School Bash a huge success this summer. Over 1,500 children attended the August 15th celebration that featured carnival games, bounce houses, concessions and live entertainment while also promoting good health. Each child received a backpack, donated by Chemical Bank, filled with school supplies to start their school year.
